APS5 & APS6, Data Scientist
APS5
The APS5 Data Scientist works under limited direction and is accountable for undertaking a range of moderately complex to complex procedural, operational and administrative activities. They may be required to conduct investigations, undertake specialist or technical research and analysis activities, or provide professional advice within an area of specialisation based on policy and legislation. The APS5 Data Scientist will demonstrate a thorough understanding of the requirements of the position, as well as the legislative, regulatory and compliance frameworks that underpin its activities. They are accountable for organising their workflow and making independent decisions relating to their work area and team plans.
The APS5 Data Scientist may be a team coach or lead a small operational team and is expected to be capable of reviewing the quality of work undertaken by others within a work group. They may be required to supervise the work of lower level employees, manage performance, allocate work and identify opportunities for on-the-job training.
The APS5 Data Scientist will be accountable for communicating with and providing advice to a wide range of stakeholders regarding more complex enquires.
Position requirements
- Experience or the ability to quickly acquire experience in one or more data science areas such as machine learning, data mining, text mining, predictive analytics, data visualisation and automation
- Knowledge and experience or the ability to quickly acquire knowledge and experience with a diversity of programming languages such as R, Python, SAS or Scala
- Ability to learn new analytical tools and methods
- Ability to investigate and analyse information using a variety of tools and to come to well-reasoned conclusions
APS6
The APS6 Data Scientist works under limited direction and is accountable to undertake work that is complex in nature and deliver quality results in accordance with the requirements of their work area and team plan with the opportunity to act with reasonable autonomy. They may exercise judgment to provide detailed technical, professional, and/or policy advice in relation to complex problems and may assist in strategic planning, program and project management and policy development. The APS6 Data Scientist will have an extensive understanding of the requirements of the position, as well as the legislative, regulatory and compliance frameworks that underpin its activities.
The APS6 Data Scientist will have a considerable level of stakeholder contact in relation to difficult or sensitive issues and will liaise with a range of stakeholders in a representation role.

Position requirements
- Experience in one or more data science areas such as machine learning, data mining, text mining, predictive analytics, data visualisation and automation
- Commitment to learning and keeping pace with cutting-edge data science knowledge, technology and practice in academia and industry
- Knowledge and experience with a diversity of programming languages such as R, Python, SAS or Scala
- Ability to see data science projects through to completion while adapting to changing requirements and ensuring a high standard of delivery
- Ability to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders Highly developed interpersonal and relationship management skills
