INTRODUCTION TO THE ROLE

The Teradata Australia Advanced Analytics team is responsible for customer success in the arena of ‘Big Data’ and Advanced Analytics and seeks to expand the team with the aim of driving further growth and opportunity in one of our key strategic domain areas. As an integral member of the broader sales and delivery team this role will help further drive value and new, cutting edge opportunities for our customers and for Teradata.

As the leader in Integrated and Active Data Warehousing and business intelligence, Teradata and its customers have long been thought and execution leaders in the use of data to drive actionable insight to deliver value.  They have collectively been addressing what is now being described as ‘big data’ use cases and challenges years before the term was first coined.

But beyond the hype, ‘big data’ brings a new set of opportunities and challenges. This also brings new technology and analytic capabilities, at which Teradata is forefront. With this comes requirement for customers to understand how to evolve their business models and existing processes to tap into the new opportunities.

This is an opportunity for a motivated and ambitious person to begin or develop their career in the most exciting area of Information Technology, working with cutting edge technology in Australia’s marquee businesses. It is expected that at least 50% of working time will be client facing, billable work with the balance being pre-sales support (including ‘proof of concept/value’ prototype) and professional/solution development.

You will be expected to establish and maintain relationships with key client personnel, developing a trusted adviser role.

This role will involve building and maintaining an expert knowledge in Advanced Analytics software, tools and techniques and an excellent understanding of industry standards and technology trends.  Essential to the role is a capability to work in a teaming environment (internally and with partners and prospects/clients), and provide thought leadership for sales executives, industry and technical consultants.

You will receive necessary training in the Teradata solutions (Teradata, Teradata Aster, Hortonworks Hadoop) as well as the associated consulting and presentation skills.

KEY RESPONSIBILITY AREAS

The Data Scientist sifts through the data for useful nuggets of information, and then presents it to the client to allow business decisions to be made on the findings. The analysis process involves assembling and preparing the data, writing the software programs, and executing the actual analysis. Advanced analysis including data mining and statistical analysis is required on the data.

The Data Scientist will have a strong analytic background, typically in mathematics and the application of statistics. Techniques are used to detect patterns in large volumes of data for applications such as forecasting, response modeling, fraud detection, and segmentation. Industry specific methods and solutions are used to solve industry specific tasks. Strong communication skills are required to convey complex analytical results to business sponsors of programs.

  • Understand customer business use cases and be able to translate them to technical specifications and vision on how to implement a solution
  • Clearly communicate the benefits of the analytic solutions to both a business and technical audience
  • Leverage knowledge in analytic and statistical algorithms to help customer explore methods to improve their business
  • Assists the sales teams develop sales strategies to drive sales and delivery of Teradata solutions.
  • Provides subject matter expertise and scopes, develops, and proposes business opportunity plans for evolving the relationship with the client
  • Is able to articulate the value proposition of Teradata versus its major competitors and the ability to convert this into client specific benefits.
  • Work with marketing on related events in assigned territories such as trade shows and webinars.
  • Perform technical qualification of prospects to define sales strategies based on a thorough understanding of each prospect’s technical challenges and business needs.
  • Achieve defined project goals within customer deadlines; proactively communicate status and escalate issues as needed.
  • Maintain proactive relationships with customers from initial evaluation through development and deployment of their application.
  • Develop demonstrations, presentations, white papers, benchmarking tools and other tools as needed to support sales and marketing.

Qualifications

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

A recent background of study in computer science or a related technical field such as mathematics or physics is required. Computer programming expertise or talent is desirable to analyze the data and provide intelligence that leads to better business decisions or new products.

  • Recent graduate and likely postgraduate degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics or related discipline.
  • Programming experience, preferably Java.
  • Database and SQL skills
  • Hadoop and/or MapReduce experience a plus

MUST HAVE

  • Strong consultative, communicative, writing, presentation and debating skills. An excellent command of the English language.
  • Excellent grasp of Mathematics and Statistics.
  • A motivated, proactive, organized and “self starting” attitude and working style. Strong personal and team goal orientation.
  • Outstanding interpersonal, communication and presentation skills – able to present to technical and business users

HIGHLY DESIRABLE

  • Data manipulation and statistical modeling experience as a Scientist, Consultant, Architect, DBA, or engineer. Experience in SQL and data analysis.
  • Experience in the use of leading Analaytic toolsets – SAS, R, Minitab.
  • Ability to manage and coordinate responses to tenders in complex and competitive environments.
  • Consulting or sales experience.
