Research Fellow/Research Associate/Research Officer

The Second Australian Study of Health and Relationships is a NHMRC-funded research project which surveyed over 20,000 Australian adults about their sexual lives, attitudes, behaviour, relationships and sexual health in 2012/­2013. Basic data reports have been published, but many more publications are planned from the rich data set.

Job purpose

As a member of the research team, the Researcher will undertake research as directed by the Lead Investigator on the Second Australian Study of Health and Relationships (ASHR2).

One or two fixed-term appointments will be made, depending on the skills and backgrounds of the applicants, at either academic level A or B (research associate or research fellow), or research officer (professional staff level 6). The grant expires at the end of 2015 and contract position(s) will not be extended.

Location

The position(s) will be located at the School of Public Health and Community Medicine, UNSW Kensington Campus.

Duties

  • Undertake analysis of existing survey data using Stata
  • Provide and check data for reports and journal articles
  • Draft and assist with the preparation and submission of reports and articles for publication in international and Australian journals
  • Conduct literature searches and reviews of the sexual health and public health literature
  • Provide teaching and conference presentation assistance in preparing PowerPoint presentations and posters
  • Perform other admin support tasks for the project and any related grant applications
  • Liaise with chief and associate investigators, partner authors, research students and professional service providers
  • Assist with supervision of research students
  • Ensure that the work for which they are responsible is carried out in ways, which safeguard the OH&S of staff or students in their charge and visitors, including contractors whom they engage

Principal accountabilities

  • Accurate data analysis and timely literature searches and reviews
  • Successful contribution to research, including drafting papers and articles
  • Effective collaboration with school staff, collaborators and partners
  • High-level and timely support is provided to the lead investigator of Second Australian Study of Health and Relationships (ASHR2)

Selection criteria

  • Postgraduate research degree or equivalent in sexual health or related field
  • Attention to detail
  • Sound understanding of basic statistical and epidemiological concepts
  • Ability to interpret, analyse and summarise existing research
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability with Office suite programs such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse weighted survey data using Stata
  • Awareness of and interest in social aspects of sexual health such as contraception, STIs, condom use, sexual difficulties, abortion, gay men, lesbians and bisexuals
  • Knowledge of EEO/AA and OH&S principles.

Indicative full-time salaries per annum

  • Research Officer, Level 6 step 1 $75,373
  • Research Associate (Level A academic) step 6 (holds PhD) $ 82,662
  • Research Fellow (Level B academic) step 1 $92,848

Researchers appointed at Research Officer level will be encouraged to apply for PhD candidature during or after their term of employment.
